Colorfields – “Decade” Album Launch
Mar 23 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Coloufields

BOOK NOW

COLORFIELDS was conceived in 1997 by drummer- songwriter Ash Read (The Streaks, The Zap Dragons, Strawbelly) as a live electro band seeking to combine elements of the exploding electronic dance music scene with an authentically live rhythmic core. The Colorfields sound draws inspiration from a wide variety of musical genres ranging from the swirling psychedelic rock of classic bands like Pink Floyd to the live dance giants, Faithless; from the edgy sonic trip-hop songs of Massive Attack to traditional and tribal World music beats, while the thought provoking content and social commentary draws much inspiration from anarchist philosophy.

In 1998 Colorfields released their debut album Incidents, which was described by Stephen Sugar Segerman as “one of the most electric and thrilling indie SA albums of the decade”. After a brief and intense period of touring, during which they shared the stage with Hip-hop giants, Cypress Hill, Colorfields disbanded due to Ash’s crippling drug-addiction – that very same addiction being the central theme running through the Incidents album.

Colorfields return in 2017 with a brand new collection of songs and a fresh line-up showcasing their unique sound. Ash Read (drums & vocals) and Kerstie Read (synths, violin & vocals) team up with legendary bass player Schalk Joubert and virtuoso guitarist Ben Badenhorst to deliver a pumping dance-driven set. The forthcoming album Decade, which is to be released on 23 March 2018, is a conceptual work bringing a message of hope and a clarion call to the rebel within for the advancement of personal freedoms, creativity and connection.

They kicked off the 2017/2018 season headlining at the intimate Aftermath festival, and will be appearing on the Main Stage of the Bazique Festival in March 2018.

Tasked with putting together an ACDC tribute for Hillcrest Quarry’s annual Tribute Fest, Riaan Steyn (drums) and Neil Lombard (rhythm guitar) assembled a bunch of their close musician friends and family, Lance Paul Jackson (vocals), Ian Smit (lead Guitar) and David Adamson (bass).

They spent the next 6 months in a rehearsal room fastidiously studying the finest nuances of AC/DC’s live performance and emerged victorious after their stellar closing performance at the 2016 Tribute Fest.

“The intention had always been to play just that one year end show but after having so much fun learning these songs and playing them that night in December, we decided to carry on gigging the show from early 2017” says Steyn.
Having now extended the show to a full 90 minutes of ACDC’s Greatest Hits and notched up a couple of very successful gigs along the way, including a sold out first time performance at Durbanville’s legendary Die Boer, expect to hear and see one of the few Cape Town bands that have managed to mimic these iconic rockers with such authenticity.

Wonderboom

WONDERrob_1

BOOK NOW

21 years on and WONDERboom are still rocking South Africa! It’s no small feat to be hailed as one of South Africa’s longest-lived and most legendary rock bands, and still going strong.

Although rock is the fundamental sound of the band, WONDERboom have delved into different genres, ranging from funk through to punk and even kwaito.

None can deny that WONDERboom’s biggest strength is their live performance. From festivals to nightclubs, the band just kicks ass – consistently!

WONDERboom have released 8 albums, headlined many major SA festivals, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award & People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands & came SECOND WORLDWIDE!

There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Green Fever, Africa, Shadows, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive, Best Side, On The Radio, Karaoke Bar and now, currently on 5fm and campus stations, Ooh La La.

Cito, Martin Schofield and Wade Williams, the founding members of WONDERboom, have been writing songs and performing together for over 23 years and show no signs of stopping the rocking rollercoaster!

It’s been 7 years and one hell of a rollercoaster ride since the release of their last album, The Automatic Shuffle.

In 2013 they lost their very dear friend and drummer, Garth McLeod, to a freak motorcycle accident.

Then, in a sort of reinvention, they’ve had to get the WONDERmachine up and going again.

Enter Jonathan Bell on drums, and so the process of a new Rock & Roll relationship began…

It’s been a cathartic and introspective journey since, but no one, who has seen them live recently, can deny the sheer magical force that WONDERboom has become again.

Rising Sun, their new album, captures this story in a dynamic way. The title track suggests what they, as a band, feel – a new dawn. A revival of what was once regarded as an electric, live and very stimulating music experience, is here again!

Singles such as Great Escape and Ooh La La have already been embraced with loving arms by fans and the South African music industry alike.

Deslynn and Audrogenius

BOOK NOW

Born in Johannesburg with roots in the Eastern Cape, Deslynn is a Cape Town girl by heart. A soul singer, songwriter and performer, Deslynn loves art as much as she loves her afro.

Deslynn is almost quiet and sometimes loud. Her vibrant personality and subtle demeanor is neither too much nor too little, she floats eloquently between both worlds.

A graduate of the Campus of Performing Arts (COPA) in Cape Town where she majored in Vocal Performance under the guidance of Emily Bruce (Gold Fish). When asked about her giftedness, Deslynn accredits her musical prowess and passion to the influence of her father.  The late Desmond Malotana was the founder, band leader and keyboardist for well-known 80’s band, “Brenda and the Big Dudes”. He wrote and produced songs like “Promises” and the hit single, “Weekend Special”.

She released her self- titled EP, “Deslynn” in 2014.  The EP is Deslynn’s first offering on record and enjoys success on local radio. “How” – a cinematic love ballad placed number 1 on the Hunters SA Top Ten (Heart FM) on 12 June 2014 where it remained for 2 weeks. The song was also ranked 8th in the Hunters SA Top 10 chart for the year 2014 while other songs on the EP dabble in Reggae, Soul and House.

Music makes her skin glow and her mind is always racing with a melody. Through her artivism, she gets really personal, really quick, intent on speaking to the souls of her listeners from the moment they hear her voice.

Androgenius is a newly formed project by Al Clapper (vocalist & songwriter), Alex Mayers (bass), Jarryd West (drums) and Michael Wilson-Trollip (keyboard and synth) and Callum Macdonald (electric guitar).
With each of them coming from different musical backgrounds, androgenius sees them stepping out of their comfort zones to blend various sounds, grooves, influences and ideas together for what they’ve aptly dubbed ‘Soul Hop’.Link to FB page: facebook.com/theandrogenius/

Nik Rabinowitz – Dry White

BOOK NOW

Nik Rabinowitz has recently recovered from his early-onset midlife crisis, just in time for Cape Town to become the world’s first city to run out of water. Run out! Imagine! Running out of milk – sure! Eggs – definitely! But water – what!? At least we’re first at something?

In his new one-man show, Dry White, Nik explores the causes and its ramifications of Cape Town’s water crisis – which if you know anything about Cape Town, you may know are not the same for everyone. He looks at the bigger picture, but also the smaller picture – the details nobody has had time to consider. For example; should we really still be referring to it as The Cape of Storms? Just saying.

It’s important to note however, that Nik is addressing the water crisis because it’s a highly relevant subject at the moment, that he knows his audience wants to hear about. And he’s using it to reel you in, so that he can get into what he really wants to talk about – relationships.

When it comes to relationships with humans, Nik has had many, continues to pursue some, and lose others. Whether it’s his relationship with his very first girlfriend – who ended up being his last girlfriend (as a result of ultimately becoming his wife), or the girlfriends in-between, or his relationship with his children or an aunt or his dogwalker (you heard me) or his late father – it’s all connected to something larger. What is that something?

You’ll have to come to the show to find out. But keep your expectations low when it comes to getting real answers – remember, this is a comedy show, not a therapy session. Then again, from my experience in therapy, I’d say there might be more to gain from a comedy show.

More history about the legend that is Piet Botha:

He started this long and illustrious career back in 1972, when as a Tuks student, he played as a solo artist at some of his hometown venues in Pretoria.

A true Rock ‘n Roller at heart, Botha is probably one of the finest guitarists this country has ever produced. His early influences and inspiration was found from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and many of the rock legends of the 1960’s and 1970’s.   In 1984 Botha formed the phenomenal rock outfit Jack Hammer and has kept the name ever since. Jack Hammer has seen many, many members come and go in it’s 33 year history, but it’s founder, the legendary Piet Botha alias the ‘Hammer’, is still rocking steady to this day.   They will be touring the Western Cape in April to release Piet’s new Afrikaans album ‘Die Middernagtrein’.

Native Young 2

BOOK NOW

When asked how he would describe Native Young –  creator of the project Yannick says, “It’s a constantly evolving tapestry of culture, emotion and melody”. Formed in the garage of a Gugulethu marimba maker in 2014 – this brotherhood is blurring lines and breaking cultural barriers through their own distinct  brand of ‘Kasi pop’.

With members stretching from Khayelitsha to Spain – Native Young is an independent collective hosting a menagerie of rotating talent and eclectic taste. Their music itself is focused on returning to the grass roots of pop, raw African rhythm and simple storytelling. It’s this simplicity that has provided the group with a vehicle for deeper cultural exploration both musically and spiritually. Often fusing English, Xhosa, Sotho and Zulu lyrics in sweeping anthemic choral arrangements – Native Young certainly is an ode to African heroes like Umoja, Super Rail Band and Marumo – along with a melodic nod to western contemporaries like the Beatles.

June 2016 saw the release of Native Young’s debut LP ‘Kings’ – a unique blend of acoustic African sound mixed with electronic sensibilities and listed as one of the top 20 South African albums of 2017 by indie music blog Texx and The City. The group has also held successful performances at prestigious international festivals like Lake of Stars in Malawi, Les Escales in France and an opening slot at Fusion festival Germany.

As for the future, the collective will be focused on touring both locally and internationally as well as writing tracks for their next full length album, set to be a conceptual journey into the heritage of African disco and traditional Mbaqanga. Music is that ephemeral expression that seems to connect us all and It’s this sentiment that boldly shines in the raw and colourful tale of Native Young.
