Amathongo is an evolving world music project which mixes traditional African styles with Jazz, folk, blues and a great variety of other music genres. It features particularly sounds of traditional southern African musical bows and other traditional African Instruments.

We aim to take you on a journey of some kind, and hopefully uplift you in that process. “Amathongo” means “Ancestral spirits” and within our playing in this group we all,  in some way reveal all our own ancestral roots and maybe some of yours, as all the musicians in this line up come from families where previous generations have rich veins of music and culture.

The current line up features the Legendary Madosini – Queen of South African traditional bow players who has been appreciated by audiences around the globe for decades now. If you haven’t seen her perform, you are missing out!

Hilton Schilder – well known Cape Town virtuoso jazz pianist and Sama award winning musician. He says he inherited his talent from the Schilder/Africa dynastyHilton has recorded 40 albums (and counting) and is a huge creative force of South African music.

Pedro Espi-Sanchis also comes from a rich musical heritage of Spanish, French, South American and African roots. He is both a music educator and amazing performer and arguably the worlds greatest uMchingo flute player (not to mention many other instruments he plays)

Versatile Guitarist Jonny Blundell was performing by the age of 10 and comes from a very musical family and is the Music Producer and sound engineer at Rootspring Music and has produced and played on countless South African albums.

Lungiswa Plaatjies is steeped in South Africa traditional music. She had already started recording at the age of 10 and has performed alongside many great South African and international artists: Madala Kunene, Amampondo, Max Lasser and is a wonderful Bow Player, percussionist, Mbira player and vocalist in her own right.
