Christine and The Kilts’ began as a theatrical piece, called “Whar’s yer troosers” which played to huge success at the Rosebank Theatre in December 2014. In 2015 it underwent a name change to ‘Christine and The Kilts’ and played resident monthly gigs at the ALMA café in Rosebank, Cape Town. Between one band member leaving Cape Town last year and another getting busy with his own stuff, a new line up was on the cards for The Kilts.
One of the new members is Jonathan Tait who provides beautiful acoustic guitar backing and poignant vocal harmonies. He is best known for his work with the band ‘Hatchetman’. Jono and Christine met when they played for the memorial service for Kader Asmal, and then with Richard Tait went on to form “Christine Weir and the Flying lizards”.
The Kilts – Boasting a repertoire that has everything from Irish jigs and ballads such as ‘Her Mantle so Green’ to ‘Danny Boy’, Scottish traditional songs by Robbie Burns and Lady Nairne, contemporary favourites like ‘500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers and ‘Mull of Kintyre’ by Paul McCartney, this is a show with a strong focus on soaring harmonies, and poignant vocal lead lines, clean acoustic guitar and traditional accordion making it Celtic music at its best
Veteran Kilt members are Matthew Weir on lead vocals, harmonies, double bass, and electric bass, and of course, Christine Weir on vocals and penny whistle. Ingrid Salzmann and Gabriella Riviera complete the traditional sound with their virtuoso accordion and violin playing.
