Die Heuwels Fantasties 1

DIE HEUWELS FANTASTIES definitely needs no introduction, because they have had the music industry at their feet right from the start. Not only are they the first successful Afrikaans Alternative Pop Rock act in the country, but they are also considered the music pioneers of their generation. The group describes its music as “melodic songs, written on acoustic guitar and interpreted with electronic and organic instruments”.

DIE HEUWELS FANTASTIES was formed at the beginning of 2008, when both Hunter Kennedy (former and current member of Fokofpolisiekar and former member of aKING) and Pierre Greeff’s (former member of Lukraaketaar) bands took a break. They formed their own record label, Supra Familias, at the same time. The band currently consists of Hunter Kennedy (singer, songwriter and bass guitar), Pierre Greeff (singer, songwriter, manager and acoustic guitar) and Frederick den Hartog (lead guitar). Sheldon Yoko recently joined them as drummer. When asked where the group’s name comes from, they say: “We wanted to choose a name that wouldn’t alienate people, but rather make them feel good. It is also a reference to the place where we grew up… the beautiful hills of Bellville and Durbanville.”

The group became an instant hit. They are revered for their unique music and their energetic live performances, and have gathered a large and diverse fan base since their inception in 2008. They have performed at all the major festivals in South Africa (Aardklop, Innibos, OppiKoppi, KKNK) and have shared the stage with local and international acts, including opening for Kings of Leon in 2012. They have also toured the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK in 2010 and again in 2015. The band has won every notable award in South Africa (including Ghoema, Tempo and SAMA Awards) for their music, singles and music videos. Their first three albums, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Wilder as die Wildtuin and Alles wat Mal is, all reached Gold status within a short period of time.

Wens jy was hier was released in December 2013. This is a deluxe album comprising of an EP with five brand new tracks, the Alles wat Mal is album and the Live op Paul Cluver DVD (a live DVD which captures the magic of their live performances). This album debuted at number 1 on iTunes on the day of its release. December 2014 saw the release of their greatest hits vinyl, Deuntjies vir die Draaifatel, as well as their fourth full length album, Ja.Nee.Lekker., which was also very well received by the public and radio.

Aside from their numerous nominations, awards and radio hits, the band’s music videos have also achieved great success on social media. Ballade vir ’n Enkeling (which was recorded by the group in 2015 as the theme song of the movie with the same name) has been viewed by nearly one million people on YouTube, while Doen Net Wat Ons Wil with Riana Nel has already reached more than 500 000 viewers. Their gripping adaptation of the poem, Stilte, has been heard by more than 100 000 listeners on SoundCloud.

DIE HEUWELS FANTASTIES has big dreams for the future, including more albums and a dive bar tour (performances in the smaller towns they usually miss, to reach a broader audience). They would also like to work with Nakhane Toure someday. “The challenge with each album is not to lay back on your past successes, to challenge yourself to be original and honest with each note,” says Pierre. It is this approach, and the passion with which they combine every note and lyric, that makes this group so unique at what they do. The new album not only promises to surpass their followers’ wildest expectations, but is also a very good indication of the great things we can expect from them in the future.
