Having gigged extensively locally and internationally as part of various bands, 2012 saw Jon Shaban launch his solo career. Armed with just his voice and his guitar, he takes to the stage to deliver songs which have been described as honest and easy to relate to. The performance is raw and there’s no holding back on the sharing of extremely personal experiences, the kind we’ve all been t haven’t necessarily processed in the way Jon does. “It’s exhausting sharing my life with a room full of total strangers” says Jon. “But it’s the feeling of walking off stage after such an intimate creative release and feeling like a new person which makes it worth it.”
Since 2012, Jon has achieved a lot in South Africa having performed at most of the country’s top festivals as either himself or with his band, The Shabs. He has graced the stage at Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, White Mountain Folk Festival and Mieliepop, where they were reviewed as one of the top bands of the festival.
Jon has also toured with and opened for various international artists such as Frank Turner, Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers) and Brett Newski.
In 2015, Jon launched his first solo album aptly entitled ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ in conjunction with quitting his job and committing to music full time.
2016 saw Jon and his band, The Shabs, launch their debut album, ‘Folk is Dead’ and after touring it around South Africa for a full month in March, Jon headed to Europe where he played over 40 shows solo and 25 with The Shabs in 9 different countries around Europe including slots at prestigious alternative music festivals, the biggest being ‘Mighty Sounds’ in Tabor, Czech Republic where they were again reviewed as one of the top bands of the festival.
On their return they got right back into the local swing of things and were invited to play ‘FORR Festival’ in Mozambique and ‘Smoking Dragon’ on New Year’s Eve where they collaborated again with Stelth Ulvang.
Currently Jon is in studio working on his 2nd full length solo album which will be released in the 1st half of 2018.
