Manny Walters Bianca Wood

South African singer/songwriter Manny Walters may describe his sound as ‘electric rhythm & blues / garage soul’, but, whatever designation you choose to apply, one thing is clear – Manny Walters is imbued with an intuitive and instinctive musicality that is rare indeed in its authenticity and gravitas. Influenced by greats such as Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Tracy Chapman and Sly Stone, Walters delivers his socially conscious and intelligently poised lyricism with the kind of passionate, soulful intensity that is as timeless in its ambition as it is inspirational in its contemporary appeal. The grit-flecked, raw soul of his commanding voice is profoundly resonant in its ability to captivate the listener. Having just released his debut EP, Walters is the kind of emerging artist who will readily find favour with those who desire music that appeals to the conscience just as easily as it satisfies the soul.

You may remember her when she shared the stage with Kahn Morbee at Cafe Roux a couple of months ago! Bianca Wood released her debut album TIME in 2015 – a powerfully written and beautifully crafted collection of original songs including two surprise covers. This is her first public offering as a solo artist, pianist and songwriter. Her second album is already in the works and pinned for release in late 2016. Honest and visceral, her work is rooted firmly in storytelling, anchored by beautifully rendered arrangements and backed by a her dynamic band.

Having shared the stage with the likes of The Parlotones and Vusi Mahlasela, there is no denying that Wood is blazing a trail in South Africa. A graduate from Stellenbosch University, she has worked as an actress, vocalist and cabaret artist for many years and has appeared in shows and arts festivals across South Africa. Her recent collaboration with The Voice SA winner Richard Stirton has cemented her as one of South Africa’s emerging acts to look out for. Normally touring with a full band, experience her intimate unplugged performance at Cafe Roux.
