Manouche’s 21st Century take on traditional Gypsy Jazz blends together sounds and influences from genres like the Tango, Waltz, Folk, R&B, Hip Hop and Electro Swing bringing audiences of all ages an original, fresh and unique sound.
Being both graduates of the composition and jazz programs at the University of Cape Town, Bernard Kotze and Sarah Blake form the basis in terms of rhythm, groove and writing original material. Diana Nielle adds to the gypsy fire with her intricate melodic attacks and finally Anneli Kamfer brings the vocal power with her incredible voice.
Sarah, our double bassist has an obsession with baking. She can whip up a cake for you in 10 minutes flat. She also has a knack for adventure sports, when we were on tour in Knysna she jumped off a bridge. Bernard, our guitarist and most handsome man in the band, is a novice at photography and videography – he also doubles up as the whole bands’ Work Husband. Our violinist, Diana, is super woman – she owns her own business and she is also unexpectedly fierce – her friendly smile is just a cover up. The golden voice, Anneli, never stops smiling. Never. We promise.
Our best gig was at Oppikoppi 2016, a festival attendee in the audience flashed us while we were playing on stage – we’ve always wanted to run into her again and applaud her “assests”.
Worst gig was at a wedding where the grandmother of the bride was so absolutely appauled by our music that she wanted us to stop playing immediately. Her exact words were “Aw no man, this is terrible.”
Our dream gig would definitely be sharing a stage with Zolani from Freshlyground. She is a big inspiration to the band, and one of the most influential people in the South African music scene.
