Legendary singer songwriter Shawn Phillips will be performing on our stage for the first time. These shows are part of a mini-tour of the Cape before he heads over to America to perform in a musical, record a new studio CD, and tour. Phillips, 73, continues to deliver his own brand of music, with rock, folk, jazz, blues and classical elements. His words weave stories pertinent to the world in which we live, touching on war, politics, greed, and love.
Shawn and his family will be moving back to the USA permanently at the end of 2016, and he will be doing shows at all his favourite venues across South Africa before he leaves the country. Having lived in SA for the last 12 years, he has enjoyed working with many of the country’s finest musicians, one of whom is Martinique Matinino who will be opening for him at the Cape shows. The name of this series of shows, featuring Shawn and Martinique, is “The Universe and its Dissonance.”
Martinique Matinino is a solo musician from Cape Town. Matinino’s music has been described as ethereal, innovative and timeless. Her genre is a mixture between classical, dark pop, and alternative. In her performances she sings and plays piano while generally using session artists, utilizing instruments such as violin, cello, percussion and horns.
