BOOK NOW

Grammy-nominee Sharon Katz, originally from Port Elizabeth, and Nonhlanhla Wanda from Durban, celebrated 25 years of worldwide touring and musical collaboration by releasing a new CD, “Side-By-Side” and will be performing songs from this CD as well as many of their compositions and arrangements at Roux Café in Noordhoek on February 22nd, 2019.

The international performers, who were the original founders of The Peace Train project in the 1990’s, went home to Durban to record “Side-By-Side” with producer Malcolm Nhleko of Maltre Studios. The Afro-Jazz-Contemporary fusion album features all original compositions by Nonhlanhla and Sharon and showcases their distinctive voices and gorgeous harmonies complemented by the instrumental virtuosity of Sharon on guitar; Qhubekani Mthethwa on bass; Charles Boykie Mnomiya on drums; and Sanele Phakathi on piano and synthesizer. For this concert, Sharon and Nonhlanhla will appear as a duo.

Following the launch of the CD in Durban, they performed in Johannesburg at the Holocaust and Genocide Center and at the Trevor Huddleston Museum before embarking on an American tour in July which took them to famous clubs in New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego and to the Tijuana Cultural Center in Mexico. The duo contributes proceeds from their concerts and CD sales toward social development projects in South Africa, including supporting a children’s home, bursaries for orphans, after-school cultural programmes, and therapeutic music projects across the country.

Sharon and Nonhlanhla are also the subjects of the multiple-award winning film, “When Voices Meet.” It documents the role of The Peace Train in creating South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial youth choir in KwaZulu-Natal in 1993; its groundbreaking concert tour across the country in support of the first democratic elections; The Peace Train’s first tour of America after President Mandela was elected; and the long-term impact of the project as told by the participants 20 years later. The film, which premiered at the Durban International Film Festival, has won awards at more 30 film festivals around the world and been broadcast in over 50 countries. John Kani and Abigail Kubeka also feature in the film.

In addition to their own CDs, the group was recorded on the Carnival! album with Sting, Tina Turner, Elton John and Madonna. They have also recorded with Dolly Rathebe and Abigail Kubeka and featured Ladysmith Black Mambazo on The Peace Train’s original tour.

Nomadic Orchestra 2

BOOK NOW

Nomadic Orchestra is a five-piece instrumental brass dance band, based in Cape Town. The primary goal of the Nomadic Orchestra is to get people moving. The band plays an infectious kind of high-energy dance music guaranteed to get feet tapping and limbs flailing. The Nomads, as they’re affectionately referred to, are strongly influenced by traditional music from the countries of South-Eastern Europe: Macedonia, Romania and Serbia. They are also influenced by Klezmer, gypsy and circus music as well as contemporary western party music. Their musical training brings a strong jazz aesthetic to the band, and thus an emphasis on improvisation.

The Nomadic Orchestra have been fortunate enough to have played at some of the biggest festivals SA has to offer. These include,  Rocking the Daisies, Oppi Koppi, Flamjangled Tea Party, Up The Creek, Synergy, Earthdance, Resonance, White Mountain, Lavender Fest, Park Acoustics, Capital Craft Beer Festival, Balkanology (Resurrection, Metamorphosis, Greek Mythology, Animal Farm) and Splashy Fen.

“It’s been a weekend, so far, of minor irritations but here, fleetingly yet gorgeously, they dissolve. This is the reason I came here, this is the feeling I’ve been waiting for…..suddenly, it was all about the music again. It was a moment where I laughed with joy, had to re-evaluate my opinion and got to dance.” – Roger Young (Mahala.co.za 2011 review)

“The Nomadic Orchestra kick the night off with a set of infectious Balkan rhythms and brass arrangements. The floor instantly turns into a mass of Pogoing kids, every face painted with a wide grin, every limb jerking in time with the tuba-driven beats. This is what every party should be like – no tedious drinking warm-up, straight into the dancing, without pretense, without concern of looking silly. This band will be huge on the emerging Balkan-dance scene.”

“A certain groove has been established and established in the most polished and professional manner. Nomadic Orchestra deliver what is expected of them – an off-beat, in the grander scheme of the Cape Town music scene, party soundtrack that lures with exoticised Balkan flavour and keeps you in the spinning wheel through the solid adherence to the post-gypsy equation

BOOK NOW

Oddo Bam is a musician from Cape Town, South Africa, with a recurring inclination to confide in thoughtful music and lyrics. Central to his musical career is a delight in the gathering of a community around music – something that is evident in the atmosphere at his performances.
Studying literature in Stellenbosch, he started performing as a solo artist in 2014 and released his first single, “Sweet Ocean”, in January 2015. A few months later he returned to the studio to record his first EP, The Snow Burial, which was released in September 2015 and features four lyrically loaded songs with an intimate living room feel.
His first full length album appeared in 2017, after having raised over R60 000 through a Crowdfunding campaign. The 12-song album was accompanied by music videos for the songs “Honeycomb” and “Winter Tree” – songs which saw the band appear on The Expresso Morning show. Bam describes the album as

“the story of a man who wakes up in the morning and decides to sell all he has. It’s a story full of tracks, autumn leaves, fragrant soil and birds whistling migration songs.”

His latest release, “Dust”, breaks into a new atmosphere, with a kwaito-esque groove that undergirds a rising tension, eventually breaking into a massive, anthemic bridge that marks a shift from the band’s former reluctance to “let it all go”.

2019 promises to be a year with new sounds and meditative angles from the local songwriter, who is working towards an album release towards the end of the year

BOOK NOW

Coming from being one of the 8 females in the top 16 of Idols season 9 , I can say that I have grown since then and so has my music. After being eliminated from the Idols Season 9 show, I somehow got more motivation and inspiration to write more of my own songs. So my music is all about life, my experiences, my lessons and I do believe in always leaving a hopeful tone in my songs. So I think the audience can expect to be amazed as they will leave the place full of hope, smiles and laughter.

Right now, I am currently busy with all the logistics for my second single and along with that a music video will too be released. So that is the next step for me and I am really excited about that and also to perform more LIVE and to share my music with more people. That is ultimately what I am most looking forward to in the future. My music journey hasn’t always been all sunshine and roses, and to me it’s not about fame and people shouting my name, that eventually is a blessing when it comes, but to me it’s all about the people you meet along the way, those you learn from and those you get to impact be it musically/socially and even spiritually. And I love every single bit of this journey and who I am becoming.

Besides writing songs and recording in studio, I too lead worship at a local church here in Paarl. I have a thing for hearts, and my favorite emoji on watssapp would be the BLUE HEART emoji, simply cause those are 2 of my favorite things. Besides singing and writing, I love reading, nature and sometimes just sitting at the beach does wonders to my soul.

My best gig experience was when I got the whole crowd singing along and it was just me with a guitar and that reminded me of how people enjoy it when you are uniquely yourself and how passion can drive a crowd.

My worst gig experience, I wouldn’t say worst I think it’s just funny.. But I sang at an event where there was a moment for all the lights to go off, at that time I was just recovering from bad sinus. The gig happened to be outside the evening and the wind was blowing like crazy. When the time came for me to go on stage, I had a runny nose..I managed to sing and make it sound like I’m not thinking about my nose running.. and luckily the lights were off, otherwise I think people would’ve just been starring at my runny nose hahaa
