The Black Cat Bones – Biography

The Black Cat Bones is a South African blues/rock band formed in Pretoria in 2007. The group consists of members Kobus de Kock jr (vocals) and Andre Kriel (guitars) with Chris vd Walt (bass), Gareth Bunge (Drums) and is considered to be one of the current top performing acts in South Africa.

Both their debut album ‘Silverton Swamp Songs’ (2009), and the critically acclaimed second helping ‘The Long Drive’ (2011) were heavily influenced by Kobus and Andre’s blues roots but, in 2013, the band released their third (SAMA nominated) studio album ‘Beatipliller’ which showcased their collective influences as a diverse 4-piece rock act. In the same year the band also won the MK Award for ‘Best Live Act’ and emerged from being underground sub-culture champions to a group that is adored nationwide by a constantly expanding, and ever-loyal following from all walks of life.

TRACK CREATED IN A BATHTUB BROKE SAFFA ARTIST IN LONDON

It has been South African artist, ANNA WOLF’s dream to work with producer Pete Boxta Martin and songwriter Dantae Johnson ever since she landed in London!

Boxta Martin is a multi-award winning and Oscar-shortlisted London-based producer that has written, produced and remixed for a variety of top-selling artist such as James Arthur, Arrow Benjamin, Jesse J, Mali Music, Missy Elliot, Rizzle Kicks, Sugababes, to name a few. Dantae Johnson is Boxta Martin’s mega talented business partner and is signed to Sony ATV in the United Kingdom.

Wolf knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone, who knew Boxta Martin and Johnson. The only way to get their attention, was to write a hit song with a fresh sound.

Wolf, previously known as Tailor, went through her thousand-plus demos and relived the nostalgia of all her growing pains as an artist until one night she wrote a song that she believed would speak through “a Boxta Martin and Johnson’s produced lens” to millions.

She took her guitar and went to the bathtub, recorded herself on her cell phone and performed the song by stumping her feet against the tub to create a sound that is still used in the final mix.

She sent the song to Boxta Martin and Johnson who summoned her to the iconic Matrix Recording Studios (Adele, Lana Del Rey) where they recorded her new single, BELIEVER!

Boxta Martin and Johnson offered ANNA WOLF an artist development deal under their company The Three Bears Entertianment and is busy recording a full E.P. with her in studio.

The now London-based ANNA WOLF wants to share her journey of discovery with her TAILOR BECOMING ANNA WOLF South African Tour.

She will land in South Africa in November and plan to do an imtimate string of performances where her hypnotic stage pressence will captivate the imaginations of those who dare to follow their dreams.

One of the most acclaimed and successful bands to emerge from South Africa in recent years, Freshlyground blends the infectious kwela style and musical traditions from Zimbabwe and Mozambique with elements of pop, jazz, blues and indie rock. Formed in Cape Town the band became a national hit with the release of their 2003 debut, Jika Jika, and a year later they found themselves performing for South African President Mbeki and sharing the stage with the legendary Miriam Makeba at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Over the ensuing years, Freshlyground toured the world and recorded six increasingly popular albums, culminating in a collaboration with pop superstar Shakira that was chosen as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They performed the song during the closing ceremony in a televised event that was broadcast to over a billion people. On a visit to South Africa in June 2013 during a speech at the University of Cape Town, President Barack Obama cited Freshlyground as an example of the contributions South Africa has made to the world. They truly represent the fresh new face of African music.

“This is the sound of striving, from people who don’t want to lose their past but at the same time want desperately to move ahead and find their place in the global mainstream. “-National Public Radio

“The band is a true reflection of contemporary South Africa. “—Afropop Worldwide

Acoustic rock artist Ard Matthews needs very little introduction to our cafe Roux audience. The much-loved frontman of legendary SA rock band, Just Jinger, delivers a world-class solo acoustic performance every time he visits our little stage.

Armed with some amazing songs & a dynamic stage presence, Ard had this to say about his experience of performing at cafe Roux many times over the years…..

“Cafe Roux is one of the very few live venues in South Africa that ‘gets it’. To them, as it should be to every other venue, the music and the artists come first. Great respect is shown when an artist performs on the night and it starts with a simple sign on each table saying ‘Shhhh, let’s listen to the music…’ Thank you for setting the bar so high when it comes to the simple art of music appreciation. Last time I played there I probably experienced my most sincere standing ovation of my career to date. It really is an honour to play at this venue”

For founding member, lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Cito (Martin Otto), music is his life. He has been involved in the music industry since he was seventeen and wouldn’t change it for the world. “When I’m not on stage or in studio, music continues to pulse through my heart. I love the role that music plays in this bizarre existence. Music has the power to make or break you,” he says. As for finding inspiration, he never runs short: “Sometimes it’s a groove that I hear in my head, other times it’ll be a line that someone has said, that just sticks and demands to be elaborated. It’s also wonderful to collaborate and when Martin sits in with me, we come up with the craziest ideas. Playing on new or other instruments also inspires me.” Cito is currently working on a number of side projects – one of which is his debut solo album – and does music direction and sound design for corporate and special events.

Martin Schofield, founding member, lead guitarist, songwriter and vocalist, is a British born and African raised lover of dogs, guitars, travel, tattoos, bacon and 50’s culture. Having worked in the industry since the age of sixteen, he has a long list of career highlights, but cites “being in WONDERboom with my brothers and paying the bills from music” as his personal best. Musically, Billy Duffy, John Squire, John Fruciante and Brian Setzer have had the biggest influence on his style. Martin is currently working on several side projects with Cito. He also does studio/session work and deals in vintage and used musical instruments.

Bassist Wade Williams has also been with the band from the very beginning. He has loved music from a very young age and, while his style is akin to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea “because of my funky rock white boy thing”, it was George Michael’s special combination of production and emotion that got it all started for Wade. To him, playing live is an incredible privilege. “There are few better experiences than playing a show where you feel completely connected, as a band and with the audience. That’s what I live for.”

Drummer Jonathan Bell – who is also a qualified attorney – grew up in a musical family and has wanted to be a drummer for as long as he can remember. He started playing at the age of twelve and hasn’t stopped since. He enjoys all kinds of music, from the Beatles to Elton John, and everything in between. While he lists playing Oppikoppi 2014 in front of a massive crowd and winning gold at the Silk Road Indie Music Festival in China as career highlights, he believes the best is yet to come.

WONDERboom is undeniably one of South Africa’s greatest musical success stories, and their latest offerings – from Praying Mantis to The Best Side Story Tour – is set to continue to cement their place as local rock legends.

PLEASE NOTE: Dinner is served from 6:30/ 7pm, the show starts at 8:30pm.

We are a five piece band living it up in the Mother city i.e. Cape Town, South Africa.

Consisting of a burning saxophonist who fights the daily urge to display his other horn in public, a bassist who is so smooth he can be the peanut butter to your jam, a drummer who in his spare time works as a panel beater and metronome, a lead guitarist who puts the “long,” in “Schlong” and who shreds not only the guitar but also the backing vox, and finally we have a vocalist who, when he finally hits the right note, still fails with the women which he tries to make up for with really average rhythm guitar.

We hope to create something unique for our listeners and hopefully our music will provoke thought, love, criticism, awe and all those feelings that may be associated with being in a dream.

Chloe Clark This dynamic, vivacious and undeniably talented songstress began her journey into music at a tender age. At 11 years old she had already formed her first band and has been filling the air with her beautiful music and infectious energy ever since.
She has already developed quite a reputation in Durban’s jazz, theatre and corporate entertainment scene, with a string of accomplishments to her name. Chloe has had the privilege of singing at the launching of the Durban July events, singing with the Kwa Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, being a backup vocalist for Ronan Keating, singing on Majozi’s first EP, as well as performing alongside artists such as Gangs of Ballet, Kyle Duitchman, Joseph Clark, Arno Carstens and many more.  Chloe made her TV debut in 2014 by making it to the Top 30 on Idols SA. More recently, she was part of South Africa’s first season of The Voice South Africa where she was in Kahn’s team (from the Parlotones).  Chloe has also performed internationally in Mauritius, Japan, China and India.
Chloe studied music at the University of KwaZulu Natal and completed her honors in Jazz vocals and vocal technique methods in 2016. In the same year, she released her debut Album which has gained national attention on local radio stations and television shows.
2018 saw the release of her jazz album, ‘She encountered wonderland’. The album is currently making waves among the jazz communities worldwide, adding to her growing international reputation as one of the hot, talented jazz vocalists to look out for!
Chloe draws inspiration from many of her favourite artists, namely London Grammar, Diana Krall, Madeleine Peyroux, Kimbra, Billie Holiday, Immogen Heap.
Maya Spector is a singer-songwriting talent from the jazz, soul music and theatre worlds. She comes from a culturally diverse and artistic family background and a consequence of her upbringing was that she found herself traveling the world from an early age, living in Japan, Swaziland, the USA, and Sweden. Settled in South Africa since 2001, she graduated from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance & Music Education.
Since then, she has appeared in musicals around the country (My Fair Lady, Jimbo, The Man of La Mancha, The Silence of the Music, RENT!) and she has performed with leading South African jazz and popular artists, as well as performing her original music on the music scene around the country since 2003. Her voice is best described as an old soul, weathered by life and schooled by adversity, yet still very much alive in vocal tone and vibrant in its expression.
Heinrich entered the music industry as a professional singer at the age of 11 as a member of the St George’s Cathedral Choir. He soon became a member of both the Tygerberg Children’s Choir and subsequently, the Pro Cantu Youth Choir. These choirs toured extensively and competed both nationally and internationally. His career spans from solo performances with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (under the direction of Bernard Gueller), live performances as lead and backing vocalist for Allou April, Ernie Smith, Wanda Baloyi, The Camillo Lombard Collective, Mynie Grové and recording sessions as lead and backing vocalist for Vusi Khumalo and Ivan Mazuze. Koos Kombuis

BOOK NOW

Koos Kombuis (born André le Roux du Toit, November 5, 1954) is a South African musician, singer, songwriter and author who became famous as part of a group of antiestablishment maverick Afrikaans musicians, who, under the collective name of Voëlvry (“voëlvry” is synonymous to the word “fugitive”), toured campuses across South Africa in the 1980’s, to “liberate Afrikaans from the shackles of its past”. Fellow musicians of this movement were Johannes Kerkorrel (Ralph Rabie) and Bernoldus Niemand (James Phillips).

They were a younger generation Afrikaner who didn’t believe in apartheid and didn’t toe the ruling National Party line.  Kombuis is somewhat of an icon among South Africans, who consider him the father of non-conformist Afrikaans culture.

He cites Bob Dylan, Neil Young as well as ex-Beatles George Harrison and John Lennon as musical influences. His musical style is folky and raw.  Kombuis often accompanies himself only with his acoustic guitar, but sometimes uses a backing rock band with world-renown musicians Schalk Joubert, Albert Frost and Kevin Gibson. He has also performed with musicians such as Stef Bos, Vusi Mahlasela, Rocco de Villiers, Syd Kitchen, Louis Mhlanga, Amanda Strydom, Laurika Rauch, and many more.

Koos Kombuis is considered one of the best lyricists in South African music. One of his most popular hits is “Lisa se Klavier”, which has been covered by Laurika Rauch and The Parlotones and translated into Dutch, Portuguese and English. He has collaborated with the Belgian artist Stef Bos on two albums and Stef has recorded Koos’ song “Onder in My Whiskeyglas”.

Koos is also known as an author and columnist for several South African publications. He is known for his sharp satirical style, never to waiver from tackling even the holiest of holy cows and the ability to bring his readers from fits of hysterical giggles to the brink of tears. He has published several novellas, an autobiography, memoires of the Voëlvry Movement, volumes of poetry, short stories and compilations of his columns.
