BOOK NOW

Watershed – structured around singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Craig Hinds who has always felt he is a man with a positive message to convey and after teaching high school for two years while playing his own material out in smaller venues Craig decided to take the opportunity to form a band and make his voice and songs heard across the world.

Watershed’s travels have led them to perform at the prestigious South by South West Music festival in Austin Texas and Canadian Music week to various dates across Europe where their music is particularly well received in Germany, Austria and Switzerland after a radio DJ on holiday in South Africa heard “Indigo Girl” and thought it would enchant his listeners. He was absolutely right. The play listing of the song on the local German station quickly built momentum and lead to them to be picked up by EMI Germany who released “In The Meantime” and every album & single since.

Working with various producer’s the band had the opportunity to hone all the facets that make up a great album and the result is their finest work to date. The new album “Watch the Rain” tips the hat to the new-age country sound while still remaining grounded in the cultured acoustic rock that Watershed is known and loved for and the first single off the album “Magical Energy” is already building momentum on the local South African charts.  While the term Watershed is universally used to describe a turning point, a lesser known use is in broadcasting field where it is used to describe the transition time when adult content can be shown and maybe now that’s a better fit for a band that has matured and realised the strength and depth of their sound and trusted in their process and abilities.  Watershed are 15 years in the making and nowhere near ready to stop.

Nik Rabinowitz – Dry White
Oct 25 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Nik Rabinowitz

BOOK NOW

Nik Rabinowitz has recently recovered from his early-onset midlife crisis, just in time for Cape Town to become the world’s first city to run out of water. Run out! Imagine! Running out of milk – sure! Eggs – definitely! But water – what!? At least we’re first at something?

In his new one-man show, Dry White, Nik explores the causes and its ramifications of Cape Town’s water crisis – which if you know anything about Cape Town, you may know are not the same for everyone. He looks at the bigger picture, but also the smaller picture – the details nobody has had time to consider. For example; should we really still be referring to it as The Cape of Storms? Just saying.

It’s important to note however, that Nik is addressing the water crisis because it’s a highly relevant subject at the moment, that he knows his audience wants to hear about. And he’s using it to reel you in, so that he can get into what he really wants to talk about – relationships.

When it comes to relationships with humans, Nik has had many, continues to pursue some, and lose others. Whether it’s his relationship with his very first girlfriend – who ended up being his last girlfriend (as a result of ultimately becoming his wife), or the girlfriends in-between, or his relationship with his children or an aunt or his dogwalker (you heard me) or his late father – it’s all connected to something larger. What is that something?

You’ll have to come to the show to find out. But keep your expectations low when it comes to getting real answers – remember, this is a comedy show, not a therapy session. Then again, from my experience in therapy, I’d say there might be more to gain from a comedy show.

Medicine Boy updated 2018

BOOK NOW

Dream Noise duo, Medicine Boy return to Café Roux to celebrate the release of their new album, Lower, which arrives October 5th on London-based label, Fuzz Club Records.

Lower is a myriad of introspection and interpretation. There are wider themes, stranger worlds and deeper wells than before. It is some kind of attempt to draw comfort (however twisted) and companionship (however tainted) from chaos and confusion. It’s our attempt to find beauty in the underworld.”

Having recently relocated to Berlin and with a full European tour set for the end of the year, this will be Lucy and André’s only performance in the CBD for the foreseeable future.

As always with all their Café Roux shows, the set will focus on the more delicate, introverted side of their songs – “It’s as much about the noise as it is about the space in between.”

Medicine Boy will be joined onstage by Hezron Chetty (violin) and their longtime collaborator and musical partner, Werner von Waltsleben (drums).

BOOK NOW

When asked how he would describe Native Young –  South African producer and frontman of the project Yannick says, “It’s a constantly evolving tapestry of culture, emotion and melody”. Beginning as a home recording experiment for Yannick in 2015 – the live Native Young band hosts a menagerie of rotating talent in Africa and Europe. Yannick’s music itself is focused on melodic emotional storytelling, raw African rhythm and the fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments – a combination which has carved out a space that’s completely his own in the musical landscape both locally and abroad for this young independent artist.

2016 saw the live band taking their unique sound across the ocean to the streets of Berlin and performing opening slots at prestigious international festivals including Fusion festival in Germany, Les Escales in France and Lake of Stars in Malawi. The same year saw the release of Native Young’s first mini album ‘Kings’ – which subsequently won a prestigious SAMA (South African Music Award) for ‘Best Alternative Album’ in 2017. The band also opened for Australian superstars Angus & Julia Stone during their 2018 sold out tour of South Africa.

There are very few artists that can uplift and bring pure joy to listeners the way that Native Young can. Those who have seen the collective live have described the act as “The African answer to The Beatles” and their performances as a “Soul exploding journey of happiness, heartbreak and spirit”. Over the last year the Spotify listenership for Native Young in Europe has reached over 40 000 monthly listeners and Yannick is currently hard at work writing new material for the project – releasing a selection of new music in 2019. Music is that ephemeral expression that seems to connect us all and It’s this sentiment that boldly shines in the raw and colourful tale of Native Young.

They’re back! Last time they played Cafe Roux The Blue Jets rocked the house with their fun, funky blues rock show.
SAMA award winning Tony Shine’s soulful but powerful voice rises from the melodies and you can sense the connection with guitarist Keith Beckett,  as the un rehearsed improvisation blends  together magically. The quiet and unassuming Juerg Thuli changes character the instant he sits behind the drums, feverishly holding the rhythm tight while his arms blur with some really wonderfully crafted technical beats. No introduction needed for Mr. Derek Harper Jr one of the finest harmonica players your will see, who has played with most of the leading musicians in SA. They have been polishing some new original numbers to add to their set of interesting takes on some obscure rhythm and blues numbers. “We’re looking forward to the reaction from the audience when we play our new numbers as they don’t fit the typical blues sound” says Tony Shine. “We just let the song write itself, it’s not contrived. There’s a little British Indie, a little Reggae, it’s all very interesting” Get your tickets and get ready to be entertained.
