Clout’s first and biggest hit, ‘Substitute’, was a new arrangement of a The Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. In 1978, their version reached No. 1 in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the UK charts for 15 weeks. ‘Substitute’ reached No. 67 on the USA Billboard Hot 100.

Due to sanctions against South African artists and performers by UK’s Equity at the time, the BBC’s Top of the PopsTV programme acquired a video clip from the Netherlands to present the hit song for its top ten countdown.

A major success in Europe, Clout scored more Top 10 singles, notably ‘Save Me’, ‘You’ve Got All of Me’ and ‘Under Fire’.

Clout split up in 1981, shortly after the release of their last major single, a re-arrangement of the Hall and Oates song ‘Portable Radio’.

In 1992, their greatest hits package was released on CD, and it was re-mastered as The Best of Clout in 2010.

2005 saw the band re-uniting after lead singer, Cindy Alter, returned to South Africa after spending 15 years in Los Angeles, USA. A new album, ‘Since They’ve Been Gone’ was released, which contained reworked versions of four of the band’s hits as well as new material. The album was supported by a 12 month tour across South Africa. The reunion saw all the members join forces apart from Lee Tomlinson (now Guy) and Ron Brettell.

In 2015, Cindy and Glenda made a number of guest appearances as a duo and played a number of charity gigs. 2017 saw a full reunion which was performed at a benefit concert in Johannesburg. Due to popular demand, the band, now including Alistair Coakley, but without Sandy, Lee and Jenny, are in the process of planning an international tour to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the release of ‘Substitute’ in 2018.

PLEASE NOTE: Dinner is served from 6:30/7pm, the show starts at 8:30pm.

His blistering version of The Animals House of the Rising Sun was enough for all four of the coaches to press their buzzers and despite some serious pleas, Craig chose Kahn Morbee the first coach to turn for him as his coach.

For the band BrotherBrother from Cape Town, music was always the tie that bound the two brothers Theunis (guitar, vocals and bass) and Roelof (vocals and guitar) van der Merwe. After the addition of Paul Avenant (percussion and Cajon), a friend turned brother, the band started to carve a big name for themselves in the South African Music Industry.

Influenced by bands like The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons and the vocal and musical mastery of Bon Iver, this Indie Folk band brings their own South African flavour to the mix, and their unique two-part and even three-part harmonies set them apart from most bands.
Roelof, the songwriter of the team, may seem calm and laid back but, according to his bandmates and brothers in chords, he is a musical genius and knows exactly which part each instrument plays in creating their unique and eclectic sound. Paul, who studied music, is the band’s ‘all-round nice guy’ and ads vibrancy and energy to the group dynamic. Theunis is the ‘dad’ of the group playing the role of manager/organiser as if it was created for him. Without him, they say, being on time for gigs would be quite challenging.
Together this family in blood and friendship create an enchanting musical blend of folk and fun, the perfect combination of beat and brotherhood.

BOOK NOW

In April of 2017 top Cape Town 90’s noise-pop Band The Dollyrockers reformed for two hugely popular shows at The Grand Daddy and Jason’s.The band was made up of previous core members, Greg Donnelly (Vocals, Guitar), Anthony Bull (Bass), Arnold Vermaak ((Drums) Stuart Crawford-Browne (now of UK band Kilter – Guitar) and ‘Lonesome’Dave Ferguson (Harmonica).

Formed from the ashes of Penguins In Bondage and Attic Muse, the band preceded the South African rock explosion of the nineties with their own brand of noise-pop that produced songs like ‘Suicide Annie’, ‘Ziggy Played Bizarre’ and ‘Walk Right Through Me’. They carved their mark into the South African musical landscape with strong performances around the country both on the alternative club scene and at various music festivals.

In their existence, the band released 3 full length albums ‘The Dollyrockers’, ‘Glory Glory’ and ‘The Heat’, as well as the vinyl e.p. ‘Consume Me’ – all produced by their former guitarist, Pitchie Rommelaere.

Songs like ‘Ziggy Played Bizarre’ and ‘Suicide Annie’ rose to the top of Barney Simon’s Alternative Charts. ‘Book I Write’ was included on a KFM cd compilation and all of this was achieved before local quotas existed on South African radio playlists.

Their songs have been used in soundtracks for movies such as ‘Once Upon A Roadtrip’ and ‘Twist’. The band also penned the theme song for TV series, ‘Couch Trip’ and ‘Sleepy Town’ was used in the TV series, ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’. Lovesong’ off their final album was listed on the 1001 South African Songs You Must Hear Before You Go Deaf.

After their hugely successful reunion shows they were approached by One F Music, run by the legendary Paul Riekert of Battery 9 and David Sass, to release a double cd retrospective called ‘Dive – A Collection’. CD1 consisted of studio material which was all remastered by Paul and CD2 consisted of live material from various shows and included the hard-to-find ‘Live At The Playground’ recordings which were only ever previously released on cassette. These recordings are a real snapshot into the world of the Cape Town live music scene of the Nineties and they also received the remastering treatment from Paul. The band also released a limited edition 7” vinyl consisting of ‘Suicide Annie’ and ‘Lovesong’.

He played many gigs in Stellenbosch whilst studying there. The Wheel Again’s first gigs were performed as an opening act for Dans Dans Lisa (One of Bouwer Bosch’s projects), and soon thereafter began gaining a following among fellow students. Steve has gone on to perform with the likes of Spoegwolf, Jackal and The Wind, The Young Folks, Oddo Bam, and Mischa Dream Folk to name a few.

Venues played in and around Cape Town include:

– The House of Machines – The Secret Gin Bar – Obviously Armchair – Alexander Bar & Cafe – Aandklas (Stellenbosch) – Cafe Art (Stellenbosch) – Many private functions and weddings

Steve went to Australia in 2016 in the hopes of playing gigs on foreign soil. With a full-time job and not much exposure, he only managed to play one but it was a tick off his bucket-list.

He went into studio late last year in the hopes of producing a Single of one of the crowd-favourites “Tugboat”, but was ultimately dissatisfied with the final product and therefore was reluctant to release.

His social media presence is that of a quirky, low-budget, but heartfelt one. Most of his videos and audio is recorded by cell-phone as he has no means of paying for high-quality recordings. There are, however, promising recording opportunities in the pipeline.

BOOK NOW

With their brand of honest, dirty rock ‘n roll, Stoker has made their presence known with heavily distorted guitars, bass and pounding drums that drive the melodic intensity of their songs.

Stoker is made up of two sets of brothers hailing from two small towns. Chris and Jurgen ‘Borrie’ Bornman are from Rawsonville and Morgan and Redge O’Kennedy are from Malmesbury. Both of the older brothers imparted their passion for rock ‘n roll onto their younger brothers.

Chris and Borrie originally kicked off as a 3-piece with drummer Joe Theron releasing their first single Stuck in the Alcohol together. In 2013 the O’Kennedy brothers joined Stoker, adding to the dose of vim and vigor.

The guys quickly established themselves on the local live scene and they kicked into high gear in 2014 with the release of their EP, Fox in a Hole.

With this release and Stoker’s revered live performances, they seamlessly became the band everybody likes or wants to be like.

Festivals caught wind of this exciting band, which led to stellar sets at Oppikoppi (2014, 2015), Up the Creek (2015, 2016), Ramfest (2014), Synergy Live (2011, 2014) and Zeegunst (2015).

The success of their singles Evil Shaker, Take a Stab and A Stranger Throne triggered the recording of their full length self-titled debut album.

Stoker’s self-titled album was released at the end of January 2017 and the first single from the album, Forever Drive, was premiered on 5FM’s Hamman Time show.

This debut album garnered great reviews and shows the listener exactly who Stoker is – a class act with a pure love for rock, setting new standards and breathing new air into rock music.

BOOK NOW

Luca Hart is known for her deeply moving and astonishing “what am I watching” violin performances, and has silenced audiences at Up the Creek and STRAB for the past 2 years. However, not so many listeners have heard her voice, or her songwriting.

This once-off performance is Luca’s way of taking a little break from the high-productions, big stages, and flashing lights, and will feature her more intimate compositions, for piano and vocals. As always, she keeps a good circle of talented friends around her, and welcomes Tim Welsh (saxophone) and Ariella Ciara (cello) to join her on a few selected numbers.

Why “Back to the dark”

Even though Luca started playing the violin from the age of 9, and went on to finish with a Cum Laude Music Technology degree at Stellenbosch, it is the piano (self-taught), that offered comfort during difficult periods. “At one point in high school we had the piano in the garage, which was more like a shed on a small holding. I crept out at night, every night, to go play it, and I never put the light on. Eventually I could play the whole Moonlight Sonata off by heart without seeing my hands. I guess that was a kind of meditation/release, and I definitely feel very close to that piano today.”

Luca started composing songs on piano from a young age, but only started to write songs with words in high school, and she considers this one of her most productive songwriting periods.
