Newton & Co was established in 2004, and since then have solidified their place on the Cover Music scene, originally started by Newton Theron & Ryno Colyn as a side project, it became so successful they put other projects aside and focused more on Newton & Co. Since 2004 the band has had a few members come and go but for the last 6 years its been a tight unit, building on their original folky rock style of music. One thing’s for sure; this cover band brings the party!

BOOK NOW

Really excited to finally be sharing a bill with Nick Turner Music
Join us on Thursday the 4th of July at cafe Roux (Noordhoek) for an evening of fantastic live music.

I’ll be sharing songs and stories from my travels abroad, as well as the extensive touring I’ve down around this beautiful country of ours.

Nick is someone that has also taken his music to different parts of the globe, something that is beautifully conveyed in his songwriting, whilst still maintaining an amazingly authentic South African sound.

Doors open at 6:30pm, with dinner served till 8:30pm. The music will start just after that. We’ll each be performing a set and more than likely a collaboration or two as well.
Tickets are R120pp and available at https://caferouxsessions.co.za/noordhoek-live-music/

A little more about the artists:
Jon Shaban is a singer songwriter based in Cape Town, South Africa. Shortly after quitting his job and committing to being a full-time artist, Jon launched his first album in 2015 titled ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ and has since toured relentlessly both nationally and internationally with his solo material and his band, The Shabs.

Fortune has indeed favoured the brave as Jon has never looked back and has performed his music all over South Africa, Mozambique, England, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Life on the road can teach any man about personal achievements, failure, love and an appreciation for the small and big things that happen and Jon has fully embraced the challenge and the experience that comes with it.

In 2017, Jon started recording his second solo album, ’Speak Your Mind’ which was released in June 2018. This project was always set to be bigger and better than the first album and includes appearances from local and international artists such as Stelth Ulvang from The Lumineers, Ann Jangle and Jay Bones (Fuzigish and Rambling Bones) amongst others. Recorded at Space Rock Studios in Cape Town, Speak Your Mind is a culmination of songs and stories written on the road over the last 3 years and cover topics such as heartbreak, politics, failure and personal discovery.

Accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist, Nick Turner was a founding member of Sons Of Trout in the late 1990s, and later one half of Mikanic, with fellow Trout violinist Mike Rennie.

Nick’s music effortlessly spans genres, with influences ranging from rock, reggae and African to hip-hop, ghoema and jazz. Lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic, his music has a wide appeal, with shows that feature virtuosic musicianship, funky grooves and catchy tunes.

After spending several years in New York, Nick returned home in 2009 to become involved in a number of music projects. He has appeared at various festivals and collaborated with the likes of Zolani Mahola (Freshly Ground), Karen Zoid and Louis Mhlanga, as well as playing solo, in a duo with bassist extraordinaire Schalk Joubert, and in a trio with the addition of another SA music legend Ash Read on drums.

Nick’s love of music extends to his involvement in a development project at Solms Delta wine estate called Music Van De Caab, which focuses on preserving the heritage of the music of the Cape (vastrap, ghoema) through facilitation, song writing workshops and teaching.

BOOK NOW

An electrifying entertainer with a powerful, smoky voice, Gavin Edwards was destined for success from his first appearance on The Voice. Seizing the position as the runner up of the show, Gavin sprinted full steam ahead with phenomenal airplay for his first single, Sparks. The single shot to #1 on iTunes a day after release and has been igniting the airwaves from radio stations across the country since its release.
On 21 October 2016, Gavin released his phenomenal debut album, entitled Silver Skies, which reached the Top 10 on iTunes. The album was produced by Denholm Harding at the legendary B-Sharp Studios, together with JP De Stefani and Harshn Reddy. Gavin sourced songs from writers all over the world – as well as one of his own originals – to compile the track listing of the album. The album also features two covers, Say something (with the sublime vocals of Karlien van Jaarsveld) and The Climb. The album was recorded in four weeks in-between Gavin’s shows across the country.
He chose Silver Skies as the name of the album because it was one of his favourite tracks on the album and is about “being in a place where you’re doing great, feeling amazing and always chasing after silver skies.” When recording the vocals, he made sure to limit the takes to one or two to ensure his voice kept the live raw emotion he is known for, imperfections and all.
In late 2016 Gavin released his sophomore single, One Day, a foot-stomping, sing along anthem, as he ambitiously took to the road to promote his album on his incredibly popular “OppiePad” tour. He traversed half the country in 2 weeks, stopping in at every radio station he could and going to his fans one by one to share his music with them.

Gavin has just released his new single – Heroes! Listen to it here ->  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xnRdEecenY

BOOK NOW

Mandisi Dyantyis is a South African trumpeter and vocalist who has recently released his debut album entitled Somandla and was nominated for the SAMA award for best Jazz Album of 2019.
Somandla
has tracks that are more traditional gospel, it has tracks that have
elements of Afro-pop as well as tracks that speak directly to the jazz
and Afro-jazz audience.
This is the link to his official video for the song “Somandla”.
It
is an incredible album and has desevedly been well received, but it
does not do justice, to the experience of seeing Mandisi LIVE.
This is another rare Cape Town performance and be sure to catch him before he leaves again for the USA.
A little about Mandisi Dyantyis:
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Mandisi began playing the trumpet at The age of 8. He Studied Classical music throughout his schooling career (Pearson High School) and emerged from the University of Cape Town with a BMus Honors Degree in Jazz Studies in 2005 where he played in the UCT Big Band for most of his studies. He is a versatile musician who is also a composer, arranger and producer not only in Jazz but Western Classical and African Indigenous Music as well. He has played with some of the country’s top musicians over the years. These include Jimmy Dludlu, The Abdullah Ibrahim Big Band, Robbie Jansen, Max Vidima, Moreira Chonguica just to name a few. He has produced, played and co written on Nomfundo Xaluva’s multi award winning albums KUSILE and From Now On.
Mandisi has just released his debut album, titled SOMANDLA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00aZmZeo6Lc). Released only at the end of October, this body of work has already garnered significant and positive attention on all spheres of media and radio. SOMANDLA is a work premised on the sacred act of prayer, peppered with issues of current societal interest and most noteworthy, the “old school” romantic sentiment delivered in the persuasive elegance of his mother tongue, isiXhosa. This debut offering is a befitting exhibition of Dyantyis’ versatility as a prolific songwriter/composer, trumpeter, and outstanding vocal artist (https://itunes.apple.com/za/album/somandla/1440476891).

He currently holds the position of Musical Director for theatre company Isango Ensemble (site.isangoensemble.org.za), previously known as Portobello. He has held this position since 2008 and has travelled around the globe as it’s musical director places like  London (West End), Cape Town (Fugard Theatre), Ireland, Singapore, Japan and USA.
