Monark updated 2018

BOOK NOW

Without a doubt one of the most exciting acts to break out from 2013, Monark are changing the face of pop music in South Africa. Mixing Eugene Coetzers uniquely characterful vocal delivery – polished with his distinctive falsetto – and Ewald Jansen van Rensberg unmatched, global production style, Monark craft songs rich in meaning and soul stirring hooks.

Performing as a 4-piece band, Monark deliver something completely fresh and unique, and are setting trends sonically and stirring up tastes in the South African music landscape. Having dominated the South African airwaves with their first 2 singles, Smiling (5FM Top 3) and Build It Up (5FM Top 5, and #1 on Jacaranda FM, Highveld/KFM, Algoa FM, OFM), they also released their 3rd single, Something in the build up to the launch of their debut album NEGATIVES. The album, which was released worldwide on 14 July 2014, peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes Album Chart on the day of its release.

MORE ABOUT MONARK

Home to some of South Africa’s most renowned legendary bands, Potchefstroom delivered their latest offering to the South African music scene – Monark – in May 2013 when the four piece pop rock band emerged with their first single, Smiling.

The band was formed when producer Ewald Jansen van Rensburg teamed up with friend and vocalist, Eugene Coetzer. For a couple of years they patiently developed and worked towards finding the specific sound they were after. Once they had discovered it, they gathered together the musicians that were needed to grow and perform the music, with Deon de Klerk joining the band on bass guitar and Graeme Wuth on drums. The band officially formed in August 2012, intent on making popular, yet tastefully engineered music with a cinematic feel.Â

With Eugenes unmistakably unique voice and soaring falsetto, Smiling immediately gained mainstream attention and popularity on major radio stations throughout South Africa. It peaked at No. 3 on 5FM Top 40 Chart and was a Top 20 hit on Highveld and KFM. The video also reached No. 1 on MKs Top 10 Chart.

December 2013 saw the release of Monarks second single and music video, entitled Build It Up. The single soon followed in the footsteps of Smiling success and charted on radio nationwide. It reached the Top 5 on 5FM’s Top 40 Chart, No. 2 on East Coast Radio and became the bands first No. 1 single, topping the Jacaranda FM Top 20 Chart, KFM and Highveldâs Kia Take 40 SA Chart as well as reaching No. 1 on Algoa FM.The bandS follow up songs – Something and You Make also did well through the end of 2014 into 2015, with a new singLe called Hush being released half way through last year to massive success across all radio stations, achieving Top 5 status in charts across the country and becoming a firm favorite at the live shows.

Monark achieved industry recognition winning the MK 2014 Award for Best Newcomer, along with being chosen as one of the selections in iTunes exclusive New Artist in 2014™ campaign. At the 2015 SAMA™s (South African Music Awards), the band were nominated for Best Pop Album, as well as Record of the Year, along with a nomination for Ewald Jansen van Rensburg for Best Producer for the NEGATIVES album.  In 2016, the band released a deluxe edition of their debut album which includes their latest singles Hush and the songs currently charting on SA airwaves, Falling and Soldier, as well as a couple of other new tracks and remixes.

Their energetic and polished live performances have been incredibly well received by their fans, with Monark performing on some of the top stages in the country – including Rocking The Daisies, Durban Day, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Parklife, 94.7 Joburg Day, KFM 94.5’s KDAY, Splashy Fen, KKNK, Durban Botanical Gardens, supporting international superstars Bastille at Emmarentia Dam in JHB, to name but a few, as well as live performances on top rated TV shows The Voice, Strictly Come Dancing, and at the 2016 South African Music Awards.

Recent projects include a collaboration on the world-renowned Coke Studios TV show with Rap icon Riky Rick, and upcoming vocal star Lisa Good.  The single that was created was called â˜Spare a Little Love’, and was released in September 2016 to great acclaim. The band released their 2nd studio album which is self titled as Monark at the end of May 2017, with the first 2 singles achieving tremendous success on SA radio, starting with genre departure Broken, and the latest being “Show Me The Love”

BOOK NOW

The Kiffness makes jazzy, groovy & uplifting house music and is fast becoming one of South Africa’s favourite live electronic acts. From the beginning of 2013, founder & brainchild David Scott has had great success in the South African music industry, racking up a total of 3 SAMA nominations and 10 singles playlisted across national radio stations – all of which have reached top 10 status in the top 40 charts.

Dave Scott founded the project in early 2011 when he arrived in Cape Town to pursue a career in music. During his studies at Rhodes University Dave played a handful of instruments in multiple bands while also DJing at a couple nightclubs. Upon arriving in Cape Town he was ready to use his experience in both live & electronic forms of music & fuse them to form a live electronic act.

From it’s relatively humble beginnings, Dave’s made his way from bedroom producer to building his own studio & becoming one of South Africa’s most reputable producers. He has collaborated with some of South Africa’s leading artists including Tresor, Shortstraw, Moonchild, Samuel Miller & Mathew Gold. With The Kiffness’ success on radio the project has gained major momentum and the group has had the opportunity of playing headlining slots at some of South Africa’s most reputable festivals such as Rocking the Daisies, Splashy Fen & Park Acoustics to name a few. They’ve also played international shows in the Seychelles, Lesotho, Swaziland (Bushfire), Zimbabwe (Vic Falls Carnival) & Vietnam.

Saxophone & synth extraordinaire Raiven Hansmann joined Dave for live shows in early 2017. Before joining forces with Dave on stage, Raiven had played a major role behind the scenes in co-writing a couple of The Kiffness’ tracks.

What sets The Kiffness apart from most electronic acts is their tangible instrumental talent. What’s more is that they are great performers, so crowds can expect nothing short of a huge vibe.

BOOK NOW

There have been a tiny handful of seminal guitar players to come along in the last fifty years that have forged a unique, musical identity for themselves and consequently have been a powerful influence on others. Zimbabwean born Tony Cox is one such guitarist. Absorbing the music of his surroundings and his upbringing and using the discipline of classical technique, Cox forged a new way to approach the acoustic guitar through the prism of the land of his birth and became so successful at it that he won multiple awards for his recorded works.
Cox’s work on the guitar has taken him around the world from the UK to Canada, from Germany to Italy and to a plethora of other countries, performing up alongside other acoustic guitar greats. Cox’s road warrior days have slowed down a lot and these days he prefers to spend most of his time at home with his family and teaching his students who dial into their online lessons from all over the planet. Of-course, writing new music is a constant in his life.
Cox’s current projects include teaching underprivileged children how to play the guitar and understanding the rudiments of music theory. To get this off the ground he joined forces with colleague Anthony Just and created ‘Player Inspire’, an organisation that advocates the free sharing of skills to those less fortunate. Cox spent a year collecting unplayed guitars from his fans for the children to use and has influenced others to start up similar projects. Other projects are a new album to begin recording in August 2019 and a book of his guitar instrumentals, pictures and stories that he is currently compiling.
Tony Cox has semi-retired from the performing circuit these days so if he does appear near you, do not miss this chance to see a real South African music icon in performance.
‘One of the first important non-traditional,  South African guitarists’ – Muse
”Tony Cox is something of a phenomenon in the worl of guitar music’  – The Mercury

A little more about the artists:
Jon Shaban is a singer songwriter based in Cape Town, South Africa. Shortly after quitting his job and committing to being a full-time artist, Jon launched his first album in 2015 titled ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ and has since toured relentlessly both nationally and internationally with his solo material and his band, The Shabs.

Fortune has indeed favoured the brave as Jon has never looked back and has performed his music all over South Africa, Mozambique, England, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Life on the road can teach any man about personal achievements, failure, love and an appreciation for the small and big things that happen and Jon has fully embraced the challenge and the experience that comes with it.

In 2017, Jon started recording his second solo album, ’Speak Your Mind’ which was released in June 2018. This project was always set to be bigger and better than the first album and includes appearances from local and international artists such as Stelth Ulvang from The Lumineers, Ann Jangle and Jay Bones (Fuzigish and Rambling Bones) amongst others. Recorded at Space Rock Studios in Cape Town, Speak Your Mind is a culmination of songs and stories written on the road over the last 3 years and cover topics such as heartbreak, politics, failure and personal discovery.

Accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist, Nick Turner was a founding member of Sons Of Trout in the late 1990s, and later one half of Mikanic, with fellow Trout violinist Mike Rennie.

Nick’s music effortlessly spans genres, with influences ranging from rock, reggae and African to hip-hop, ghoema and jazz. Lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic, his music has a wide appeal, with shows that feature virtuosic musicianship, funky grooves and catchy tunes.

After spending several years in New York, Nick returned home in 2009 to become involved in a number of music projects. He has appeared at various festivals and collaborated with the likes of Zolani Mahola (Freshly Ground), Karen Zoid and Louis Mhlanga, as well as playing solo, in a duo with bassist extraordinaire Schalk Joubert, and in a trio with the addition of another SA music legend Ash Read on drums.

Nick’s love of music extends to his involvement in a development project at Solms Delta wine estate called Music Van De Caab, which focuses on preserving the heritage of the music of the Cape (vastrap, ghoema) through facilitation, song writing workshops and teaching.
