What started out as a brief flight of fantasy and imagination three years ago has evolved into something quite special; a visual and audio feast of the highest calibre.
It is a known fact that Depeche Mode, because of their level of musical and production technicality, is not the easiest act to emulate. Music for the Masses strives fearlessly to capture the true essence of Depeche Mode with an audio and visual performance paying true homage to one of the greatest bands of all time.
Allow us to take you on a journey and spark up memories from a time where innovation and the reinvention of fashion were at their prime. A time when you could be anyone you wanted to be on the weekend with a little eyeliner and leather; when teased hair and long fringes were the order of the day, when Doc Martens was still an intern in the electronic halls of the New Wave sound.
Music for the Masses is the Perfect Party Band for your next Corporate Function Conference or Event
Who is Music for the Masses?
The band was formed by three “Brothers in Mode” namely:
Elton “Otis Vocal” Tuck – Having spent many years in bands as both a vocalist and drummer Elton brings an element of showmanship mixed with an element of rock theatrics to the bands performance. A lover of what Depeche Mode stood for and the ground breaking influence the band had played a major role in Elton’s music career. Through his journey Elton has recorded with a variety of artists from around the world. His fearless rock induced influence is evident in this frontman’s performance. A recorded artist that has held a number one spot on Zone Radio (SA), Radio Caroline (UK) and Fame Music Radio (SA) with his collaborative work with Rebeka Rain and the band LIFE. In the past Elton has worked and recorded with British composer and musician Duncan Mackay (ex 10CC, Cockney Rebel and Kate Bush). Elton has also worked with Mick Evans of Melpro Studio’s in Australia where he recorded the song Coming Home with Rebeka Rain.
Sean “Styx” Nunan – Sean started drumming at the age of 17 and turned professional in 1988. In 1990 Sean joined popular South African band Shifty Henry and stayed for the next 3 years. Thereafter Sean, together with two of his former band mates, formed Avalanche where he played for the next five years before moving to Cape Town where he went on to form the bands Almost Famous and the ever popular Absolutely Fabulous Duo.
Sean is a professional musician, a self-termed “Tech Junkie” and a Roland V- Drums Ambassador, making him the perfect member of Music for the Masses. Sean is also an in demand session drummer and has performed on various albums and jingles. ‘ I think my strengths as a drummer are the fact that number one I grew up playing to a click track, which has helped me get a lot of regular studio work, and I am also passionate about all aspects of our art form.
Eric Mc Callaghan – To try and sum the multi-talented Eric M into a few words or even try to box his list of achievements is near impossible. Eric has held various number one hits with remixes of Depeche Mode in Europe for many years. A producer and song writer with an innate talent to mix international sounds into one glorious magical wonder. Signed to BMG Records Africa in 1996 saw him quickly produce and record anything from local rock and pop remixes to originals that went onto international playlists and compilations.
From the late 80s –
- Kevin van Staden’s Communique
- State of Mind
- Casual Culture
- Girl 2 Boys
- Then performed solo as C4 for 10 years with various vocalists and dancers to promote his 150 CD releases.
Some of Eric’s accomplishments have been:
- Xplicit” (under his Heatseeker alias) was #1 in South Africa for several months in 1999 and received the Best South African Dance Track award. It is released worldwide on more than 30 compilations.
- “Reflections” received a South African Music Award Nomination in 2003.
- “Touch Faith” is an official Depeche Mode remix of Personal Jesus, and was #1 in Belgium, 8 weeks on the sales charts and Ultratop 40 2007
- “Woven” was #29 on the world DMC Trance Charts in 2008.
- Paul Oakenfold played Eric’s “I’ll Wait For You” at a 911 benefit concert in New York 2001
- John ‘00’ Flemming gave “Spinning” 4 ½ out of 5 in Mixmag 1998
- DJ’ed in Pakistan, Belgium, Holland, UK and at Miami WMC 2011
- Released on more than 150 CD compilations, albums and singles
Put these musicians on one stage and you will soon see why they are the three best musical tour guides to take you on your journey through the sounds and sights that is Music for the Masses – A Salute to Depeche Mode.

Luca Hart is known for her deeply moving and astonishing “what am I watching” violin performances, and has silenced audiences at Up the Creek and STRAB for the past 2 years. However, not so many listeners have heard her voice, or her songwriting.
This once-off performance is Luca’s way of taking a little break from the high-productions, big stages, and flashing lights, and will feature her more intimate compositions, for piano and vocals. As always, she keeps a good circle of talented friends around her, and welcomes Tim Welsh (saxophone) and Ariella Ciara (cello) to join her on a few selected numbers.
Why “Back to the dark”
Even though Luca started playing the violin from the age of 9, and went on to finish with a Cum Laude Music Technology degree at Stellenbosch, it is the piano (self-taught), that offered comfort during difficult periods. “At one point in high school we had the piano in the garage, which was more like a shed on a small holding. I crept out at night, every night, to go play it, and I never put the light on. Eventually I could play the whole Moonlight Sonata off by heart without seeing my hands. I guess that was a kind of meditation/release, and I definitely feel very close to that piano today.”
Luca started composing songs on piano from a young age, but only started to write songs with words in high school, and she considers this one of her most productive songwriting periods.

My first video of Erin singing is when she was 4 years old. This video includes Leah Bell Leask, the two have been friends since birth and Leah will be joining Erin on stage on the 8th May. However, Erin was singing before she could even talk properly. She began her first singing lessons at 11 years of age and quickly moved onto teaching herself piano and guitar so that she could accompany herself. She is now just as passionate about drama as she is about music and feels quite at home on stage. Her dream is to build a career in the performing arts industry and she has been determined to achieve this goal since she was 6 years, old with her determination and commitment growing with each passing year. To be invited to perform at this prestigious event in the United States in July is the stepping stone she has been waiting for and working towards all these years. She was over the moon to be accepted and invited by Kim Meyers to perform on the ARTS stage in Orlando Florida and has worked extremely hard to prepare herself for this event. Erin is hoping to make the most of this opportunity and sees this as the beginning of her career in an industry she has always dreamed of.

Born in 2003 in the shadow of Table Mountain, Bed on Bricks celebrates their 10th birthday this year. A band that has appeared on stages all around South Africa, headlining many local festivals and touring the country, while also releasing three studio albums, namely ‘Humanarium’ (2003), If You See Kay (2005) and Royal Honey (2008), as well as a live acoustic album, ‘Takeaways’ in 2006.
Singer Mike Hardy’s lyrics are smart, positive, informed and questioning. Whether they are rapped or sung, they remain inspired by life in urban Cape Town. Schalk van der Merwe’s bass, Tim Rankin’s drums and Dave van der Linden’s guitar are played with passion and energy.
They have been on a forced sabbatical for 2 years after Dave broke his hand and has been unable to play.
Bed on Bricks are into the sweetness of life at the Southern tip of Africa and playing their instruments for the love of it. And man do they love it!

Newton & Co was established in 2004, and since then have solidiered their place on the Cover Music scene, originally started by Newton Theron & Ryno Colyn as a side project. It became so successful they put other projects aside and focused more on Newton & Co.
Since 2004 the band has had a few members come and go but for the last 6 years its been a tight unit, building on their original folky rock style of music.
Starting as a cover band they have all the old sing along classics, as well as a load of fresh new modern music, ranging between Irish Folk, Pop, Rock, Funk, Reggae or what ever the needs be.
One thing that is certain this band will get the party started.
PLEASE NOTE: Dinner is served from 6:30pm, the show starts at 8:30pm.
Nomawethu (Nhoza) Sitsholwana is a singer/songwriter in a genre she calls ‘traditional African fusion’, which personifies blues, jazz and traditional African music. She was born in a small Eastern Cape village outside King William’s Town and now resides in Cape Town.
Nhoza, who proudly calls herself unolali, meaning ‘village girl’, uses a natural skill to combine her deep-seated traditional African harmonies with strong blues/rock influences that she picked up from her years on the Capetonian music scene.
In 2002, Nhoza left the village with her parents and moved to the big city of Cape Town where she met up with a wonderful vocalist from Gugulethu, named TitNhozaTira and a keyboard player naNhoza Yeye. “They trained me on how to work with a live band and trusted me with harmonies since I had the choir background.” Her first show was at Maningburg Jazz Cafe at the Waterfront – not bad for someone still in high school.
Roots Grown Deep to name a few, and has also worked with the Vuyan Dance Company on their themed performance (Sophiatown) in Johannesburg.
She has travelled extensively around South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and for the last 10 years served as front-woman for her own band Black South Easter.
Now, at the ripe age of 31, this unolali is ready to spread her wings as a solo artist and share her love of music with the world.
With her wide vocal range, beautifully developed into the rich, soulful blues/jazz sound she radiates on stage today, Nhoza’s early days in the church choir seem like a lifetime ago, but she still recognizes this vital part of her history as a springboard for her musical career. She has put together a band of brass, bass, drums and keys to accompany her unique genre, although she regularly performs as a solo or duo act.
From singing in jazz clubs at the age of 15, Nhoza would go on to craft a musical career of note, sharing the stage with the créme of Southern African blues artists like Richard Pryor, Riaan Smit, Dale Collins, Doc John, James Kibby,Sannie Fox, Guy Collins, Ann Jangle and many more.
