Amathongo is a Cape Town based World Music project which mixes traditional African styles with jazz and a great variety of other music genres.
Almost immediately I was reminded of Dollar Brand’s Manenburg, Miriam Makeba’s ‘Sophiatown and ‘Queen’ Madosini’s Transkei and I wondered how Amathongo could make me feel as if I were in all three places at the same time.

Amathongo is an evolving world music project; Truly unique, South African and original. It is fluid, creative and always involves improvisation, but deeply rooted in traditional African styles. The sound strongly features traditional southern African musical bows and other traditional African Instruments.
Amathongo aims to take you on a journey of some kind, and hopefully uplift you in that process. “Amathongo” means “Ancestral spirits” and within our playing in this group we all, in some way reveal our own ancestral roots.
At present, Amathongo are:
Madosini – Uhade Bow, Mhrube bow, vocals
Hilton Schilder: Piano, Keyboards, percussion
Pedro Espi- Sanchis – Umchingo flute, Mbira, Kunde harp, vocals, Guitar, percussion
Lungiswa Plaatjies – Vocals, Mbira, Percussion.
Jonny Blundell – Acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, percussion.
(On occasion, depending on the need,Amathongo hire in a drummer and or Upright bass player.)
