Gimme Shelter – A Night of Rolling Stones Music
They are the world’s longest-running rock ‘n’ roll band and arguably one of the most influential bands of all time. This October, four of Cape Town’s top rock artists will pay homage to The Rolling Stones.
The musical spectacular Gimme Shelter: A Night of Rolling Stones Music will be presented by Jean ‘Tunes’ Marais, Wouter Reyneke, Jacques Groenewald and Piet Botha.
“The Rolling Stones have always been a part of our lives,” says Piet. “I started listening to them in 1964 and since then I have been a loyal fan, following their history, all the changes through the years and of course, their music…”
Stones followers can expect to hear all their favourites, like ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ and ‘Wild Horses’ and even a few they’ve never heard before.
“They blew my mind when I heard them in 1994, and I must have played that tape (back in the day we bought music on tape…) all day, every day,” says bassist Wouter Reyneke. To drummer Jean Marais, his first experience with ‘Gimme Shelter’ was one of ‘somewhat contentment in the ominous melody of the intro, rooted in the uneasiness we all sometimes have to face’.
Probably the biggest Stones fan in the group is guitarist Jacques Groenewald.
“The Stones were the first band to grab my attention at a very young age. Two guitar players complementing each other, or ‘the ancient form of weaving’, as Keith and Ronnie call it. In the end it’s all just rock ‘n’ roll… but I like it.”
