When asked how he would describe Native Young –  South African producer and frontman of the project Yannick says, “It’s a constantly evolving tapestry of culture, emotion and melody”. Beginning as a home recording experiment for Yannick in 2015 – the live Native Young band hosts a menagerie of rotating talent in Africa and Europe. Yannick’s music itself is focused on melodic emotional storytelling, raw African rhythm and the fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments – a combination which has carved out a space that’s completely his own in the musical landscape both locally and abroad for this young independent artist.

2016 saw the live band taking their unique sound across the ocean to the streets of Berlin and performing opening slots at prestigious international festivals including Fusion festival in Germany, Les Escales in France and Lake of Stars in Malawi. The same year saw the release of Native Young’s first mini album ‘Kings’ – which subsequently won a prestigious SAMA (South African Music Award) for ‘Best Alternative Album’ in 2017. The band also opened for Australian superstars Angus & Julia Stone during their 2018 sold out tour of South Africa.

There are very few artists that can uplift and bring pure joy to listeners the way that Native Young can. Those who have seen the collective live have described the act as “The African answer to The Beatles” and their performances as a “Soul exploding journey of happiness, heartbreak and spirit”. Over the last year the Spotify listenership for Native Young in Europe has reached over 40 000 monthly listeners and Yannick is currently hard at work writing new material for the project – releasing a selection of new music in 2019. Music is that ephemeral expression that seems to connect us all and It’s this sentiment that boldly shines in the raw and colourful tale of Native Young.
