The Shabs

March 15, 2017 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
cafe Roux, Cape Town

The Shabs is a Folk Punk duo from Cape Town South Africa.
Having gigged extensively across South Africa for the past 3 years they deliver a tight, captivating set that blends sincere, melodic sing-a-long folk with the raw energy and DIY ethos of punk rock. Drawing influences from artists such as Frank Turner, Erik Peterson and Against Me!, the band never ceases to get a crowd to throw their fists in the air and sing along to their anthemic tunes which have  been described as honest and raw and  easy to relate to. The band is made up of singer/songwriter Jon Shaban on guitar and vocals, Ryan McArthur  on double bass and backing vocals, as well as frequent collaborations with drummers and accordian players. Each musician brings their own flare and flavour to the music, adding  to the uniqueness of their fresh  ‘’High Quality Folk Punk” sound. They released their debut album “Folk is Dead” in February 2016 supported by a 27 show South African tour over March/April including festival performances at Outland Festival and Mieliepop where they were reviewed as one of the top bands at the festival. July 2016 saw the band leave for Europe where they played a 6 week tour over 5 countries. Again, the band was reviewed as a favorite at The Mighty Sounds Festival in Tabor, Czech Republic.
